Clifford D. Sharp, FIA., ACII, Was born in London 1910, schooled at Aske's, Haberdasher's, Hatcham. He was married in 1934, has two children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He left school in 1928 to join the Actuarial Department of the Gresham Life Assurance Society (a company with extensive overseas business). He went to India for the Gresham late in 1939, qualifying as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in 1940 and was appointed actuary for India, Burma and Ceylon. In 1944, he calculated (for the first time mechanically) and then published, the first set of actuarial functions based on Indian assured mortality which became the accepted standard for life assurance in India for many years. In 1946, he returned to the London head office as Assistant Actuary, involved with operations on the Continent, the Near East, South Africa, India etc. and spent some time working in Egypt. He moved to the parent company, the Legal & General in 1950, went to Australia in 1955 to set up life assurance business there. He returned to the head office in London in 1959 and in 1960, joined Noble Lowndes the leading pension consultants as Chairman of their trustee company and director responsible for overseas operations covering Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Rhodesia, Eire and the Continent. He became President of the Society of Pensions Consultants in 1962, retired in 1970, later becoming Deputy Chairman of Lloyds Life and Chairman of TransInternational Life. For three years he was a member of the original Occupational Pensions Board. He remained a consulting Actuary from 1940 involving operations in Zambia, South Africa, Nigeria etc. Locally he was Chairman and Deputy Chairman of Boards of Governors of two schools, one for mal-adjusted children, from 1964 until 2000. He was founder, and Chairman for ten years of local Civic Society, pension trustee of the Hospital Saving Association for twenty-five years until April 2001.. Although Clifford is not personally involved in historical, scientific or psychological research, the list of books in the Bibliography shows the level of reading and research that has gone into producing this new revised edition of 'The origin and evolution of Human Values'.
